Your oral hygiene is important to the health of your mouth because you are the first line of defense from cavities and gum disease. While our dental team can remove hardened plaque from the teeth and gumlines at your routine cleanings, your daily efforts are vital in between appointments.

Because bacteria thrive in the mouth, they need to be removed daily to prevent them from building up and hardening. Brushing and flossing every single day remove the harmful layer of sticky dental plaque where bacteria lives, and tends to accumulate between the teeth and along the gumline. The food and drinks you have feed the bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria thrive on sugary, starchy foods particularly, producing harmful acids that attack teeth and gums. This invites gum disease and tooth decay unless you clear it away every day.

When oral plaque builds up, cavities develop and the gums are irritated, causing them to pull away from the teeth. As gum pockets form and fill up with bacteria and pus. The result? Loose teeth that can eventually fall out!

To rid yourself of plaque, brush twice a day and floss once a day. Your toothbrush clears plaque off tooth surfaces and flossing clears plaque from between the teeth and along the gumline. To protect your gum tissue and tooth enamel, we recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a head small enough to reach the molars in the back of the mouth. You can take your oral care a step further with the help of an antimicrobial toothpaste with fluoride if you are cavity prone.

Finally, you can swish after cleaning with an antimicrobial mouthwash once a day to lower bacteria and plaque levels, especially before bedtime. If you want to know more about which mouthwashes work best according to your oral health care requirements, we are happy to give you personalized advice.
